The Start of a Games Design Journey

Hallo! Today I begin my critical games design blog, and I think it's important that I do so with the clear purpose of not only showing who I am as a person, but also displaying a clear head with which I can convey my developing thoughts on the subject effectively in the future.

Having just started the games design course at UCS in Ipswich, I was interviewed about various topics surrounding the subject and I am to relay my answers for said interview in this post, that is what I would like to do now.

What is the title of the book (fiction) you are currently reading (or the last fiction book you read)?
Although I suffer from an eye condition called Keratoconus that makes it very difficult for me to read a huge amount recently in my life; when I was younger I read a large amount of historical-fiction, as was my preferred genre, the latest of which was "Attila" written by William Napier.

What is the title/topic of the book (non-fiction) you are currently reading (or the last non-fiction book you read)?
I tend to refer to non-fiction books rather than read them cover-to-cover in a short time, I also prefer these books to be entertaining as well as informative. With that in mind, the most recent example of this that I referred to was a book called "My Grammar and I (or should that be 'Me'?)" written by Caroline Taggart and J.A. Wines.

What is the last live performance (music, drama, or dance) you attended?
Although I am quite fond of going to theatres to watch drama performances; I am incredibly passionate about music, and tend to attend many more musical performances than anything else. The latest of which would be an event called "Massacre Festival", held in Gloucestershire, at which I also performed on stage with my own band.

What is the title of the last film you saw at the cinema/online or watched on dvd?
The most recent film I watched is also my favourite film: "How to Train Your Dragon", on DVD.

How often do you read a newspaper? (Which one? Online or physical?)
I have an active dislike of newspapers which has resulted in my never reading any newspapers, ever.

Which art gallery/museum/exhibition did you last visit?
I have never visited quite as many art galleries or museums as I would really like, however the latest exhibition I've visited would be Eurogamer.

How many  hours a week do you spend playing video games?
This is a difficult question to answer accurately, as the question suggests some semblance of regularity. I assure you, there isn't even the slightest hint of regularity when it comes to my habits of video gaming. There are some weeks, the number of which is increasing, where I don't play any video games at all; however there are still many others where I spend most of my available free time battling away online on Starcraft II's ladders, or rushing to finish the story of a game that had just been released. If pressed to give an answer, I would have to say 20 hours, as a diplomatic compromise between the two cases.

How many hours a week do you spend playing games other than video games?
Now this question, on the other hand, is much easier for me to answer. I can say that with great accuracy that I almost regularly spend 5 hours a week playing such games.

That concludes the interview to begin the critical games module. It is my hope that these answers may give you some insight as to the kind of person I am at present, and that future entries will display the growth and improvements that I intend to attain.

  1. Hi Alaric,

Well done on getting your critical games blog up and running.

There are some interesting answers here, from the informative and provocative to the tantalisingly vague: it's good to know, for example, that you would like to visit more museums as there's a trip to the British Museum in the offing (and Ipswich has a small museum tucked away on the High Street if you need something to tide you over until then).

What is the non-digital game that you spend almost five hours a week playing? Is it clock-chess, with five hours each on the timer?

And do you think that because your sworn aversion to newspapers means you won't be able to check out the Guardian games blog , that it might be time to reconsider?

    1. Hay,

Thanks! Although I'm fond of chess, these five hours are generally spent playing an assortment of various board games at the gaming society held at UCS, or at the houses of various friends.

Hmm, well I think I'm happy to read paticular items or articles in newspapers if they were referred to me in the confidence I would find them interesting or useful!
